My wife is looking into the possibility of us working together to create a travel-oriented website. She wanted answers to a few question and I was hoping you might be able to help.
What does it take to become an online travel agent?
Are there services available for website owners so a visitors can make hotel, flight and car rental reservations on our website?
Anyone have experience doing something like this?
Do you know of a smaller site where people really are making some money compared to the giants like Travelocity, Orbitz, Expedia and others?
Thanks for any light you can shed on this.
Cheers,
Ernie Martin

Would either you or your wife have a travel agent's licence? We are exploring the possibility starting a on-line travel business.

Yes, there are good options available (such as Travelocity's www.wctravel.com) that can power your website.
For the website owner, the work is limited to contracting out the website development, creating custom content added via maybe a blog (would be a breeze for you given your travel experience), and marketing the website (to your network, via print and internet marketing, etc). We have experience doing this and can help.
You can make money if you can increase traffic to the website without a large marketing spend, perhaps by focusing on a niche or geography, and in due course, maybe supplement that by adding relevant advertising from your preferred hotels, suitable products, etc.
