Any information or experience "cruising" on an ocean freight liner?

I took three regular cruises in the past. I am interested to look into cruising on a mega ocean freight liner. I heard those type of cruises are economical and no frills such as eight course meals, pampering; just cruise and eat in employee dining room or few tables for the tourists.

Anyone took that cruise? Places like in Europe, S. America, Asia, etc?

Any type of information and booking is appreciated. Is there a guide book for such a cruise on an freight oceanliner?
